DRONEFACE Texture Factory: Mapping the imagination, with a samurai-helmeted mecha

What would it be like to have an enormous library of visual details, ranging from simple geometric “noise” to elaborate compositions that transform basic panels and primitives into complex-looking geometry? What about PBRs and other goodies?

The upcoming release from DRONEFACE answers that need in spades. In 1999, we launched FUTUREHAUS, one of the pioneering texture libraries distributed on CD-ROM. Texture Factory is the next chapter.

Hulls, panels, walls, floors, and ceilings. Instrument panels, plumbing, and steampunk machinery. Vents, microchip layouts, portals, focal points, leather, and an extensive library of seamless grunge maps that can be layered over almost anything. These maps let you control exactly how distressed and weathered a surface appears in its color channel.

Many of these textures are the 2D equivalent of greebles—or nurnies, if you learned the trade in a different model shop—the small surface details that make big things look big.

At 2K resolution, the piping maps hold up well in close-ups, provided you account for the lighting baked into them. The same applies to many other images in the collection.

What else can I expect with this lineup?

There’s much more on deck than color maps: a series of 8K PBR collections. The new sets are organized into coordinated lines that will help art directors achieve “a look.” Those assets are not pictured here yet, but examples will be added to the site soon. Six sets are already finished, with many more in progress.

You’ll find clean materials for objects that are newly built rather than weathered by years of service; separate surface-marking layers, so hull codes and hazard stripes can go where you want them instead of where we placed them; and illuminated surfaces. And then you’ll get our specialty, too, which is the weathered and worn stuff that every science fiction universe thrives upon.

Our 8K assets are designed to fit together. The module size, scale, and fastener spacing remain consistent throughout, so a deck meets a bulkhead and a capital plate meets a repaired hull without requiring manual adjustment.

Each collection includes 8192 × 8192 master files, four resolutions, thirteen maps, both normal-map conventions, and packed ORM maps. They use standard PBR formats and can be dropped into Blender, Unreal Engine, Unity, or any other application that supports the usual map types.

Seamlessness is measured rather than merely claimed. There is no baked-in lighting—nothing to compensate for.
