HAMMER[SCAPE]

The Tree

HAMMER[SCAPE] remains an unrealized dream of mine—to compose a concept album with dark ambient ideas and some heavy doom metal riffs dressed up with weird world-music timbres that you don’t often hear in the genre. Honestly, I can’t remember why I abandoned this project, but know this: it's flawed in many ways, both compositionally and in the engineering. Also, it's not mastered at all. Caveat emptor. I fully intended to recruit others into this one and to labor over it, but apparently life happened.

The metadata in the MP3s tells me this started around 2006, which sounds about right, but I know I went back to some of these several years after that and tweaked a few of them. I was really into the funeral doom band, Evoken, back then, and I can hear some of their influence in this. \m/

The central concept concerns a young boy who tastes the psychedelic sap of a haunted graveyard tree. The sentient tree hears the living with its leaves and hears the dead with its roots. Madness overtakes the boy as the sap fuses his mind with all the memories and horrors that the tree has encountered in its existence.
